In Graphic Design Formative 4 during DCF, we were tasked with making Logos for ourselves. Logos are beneficial for all forms of artists, as a sort of signature, that is recognizable and unique.
I really enjoy EDM artists/DJs such as Avicii, Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris, etc... luckily they're known for having very distinct and well-known logos.
I drafted up an A4 page of ideas, initially trying to use my initials "AKR", this however, proved difficult as having 3 letters makes it hard to make a logo visually symmetrical or makes it hard for it to not look cluttered.Â
I then tried removing my middle name initial and came up with some ideas. I found that they can be arranged in a relatively symmetrical shape by making the "A" right-angled and making the round part of the "R" sharp, taking inspiration from Skrillex's logo font.
Once I had decided on the rough silhouette for the logo, I started experimenting with internal letter shapes. This also reminds me of the late DJ Avicii's logo, so it's like a subtle homage in his direction as well.Â
I originally had a straight right-angled triangle as my "A", much like his logo, but I felt it would be too similar, so I added the internal blank space. The empty "A" inside is also similar to Avicii's text logo, except he had a flat top. I decided to make my "R" as if someone sliced the "A" and pushed it inside.
I then went to digitalize my idea.
Back last year during Graphic Design in DCF, we had to make a logo for a formative. I made this logo, but I wasn't pleased with it as it didn't have visual symmetry. In my opinion, it also looked too skinny and didn't fit into a circle well, so it wouldn't be great as a logo/profile picture.
I kinda just left it at that until I decided to make this website.
In DCF, we were working on our portfolios, however, I felt like a PDF is too boring and not very engaging/interactive, so I decided to make this website. When I was adding a favicon, it occurred to me that I didn't have one, nor did I have a logo for the menu bar, so I decided to try to make a logo. While playing around with logo ideas, my girlfriend mentioned that we'd already done this in Graphic Design, so I went on the hunt for my original ideas (which I eventually found after a while) and resumed from there.
While scouring the web in search of inspiration on how to fix my flawed logo, I came across a series of logos (like the one pictured) that featured a 3D Anaglyph effect. I'm not sure if it's functional, but it definitely looks pretty cool. I tried to incorporate this into my logo, however, I wasn't a fan of the Red/Cyan color combination as it makes my brain hurt, so I substituted it for my favorite color combination of Magenta/Cyan.
Iterative Process
I started off with a design that was very similar to my initial design, but it was (like my original design), rather lop-sided and looked uneven (because it was)
I squished the A horizontally to see if it would help with the asymmetry, and it did, a bit.
However, it still looked wrong. It looked a bit awkward having a small logo in a big circle.
While playing around with the distort transform, I discovered that this could be an idea. It would solve the size issue, and make the letters even as well.
I tried to even out the letters, however, it was an absolute pain and made it look worse than before
I showed the design to my girlfriend as I was at a bit of a roadblock and she suggested that I make the "A's leg" touch at the same height as the "R's leg".
This was my "Proof of Concept" test to see if that would look good.
At this point, I thought I was finished, but it then occurred to me that the 3D Anaglyph had swapped over at some point. I wasn't sure which one I preferred, so I went and asked a bunch of people for their input. A couple said that they preferred the version on the left, featuring the A with an incorrect anaglyph. However, most people said that they preferred the version on the right, with the correct anaglyph.
It also then occurred to me that for some reason, the background of the logo was grey, not black, so I changed that because it doesn't look as cool.
